2017 is your year to have an organized home and I’m here to help!
In early January we will have our first annual Organizational House Challenge, and I super excited to share this with you! One of my goals of 2016 was to get better organized including my home, having a large household means LOTS of stuff everywhere. I was able to compact my house down and get rid of TONS of things. I donated over 15 bags of stuff no one wanted or used anymore; clothing, toys, household items; did you know we had like 6 different spatulas and so many extra cooking utensils that were totally unnecessary!?
It’s crazy to see all the things you have once you start pulling out things and get a good look at it. My house however; is always a work in progress I am always going through it and organizing it as I see things get unused throughout the year or find a new way or organized something. I plan on starting the Organizational House Challenge the second week in January after the new year and will last to about mid year; you can honestly start whatever and where ever you want. You can skip around to your worst room or skip the rooms and area you may not have (like office for example).
The challenge will cover all areas of your home including your garage, basement/attic, and even your car. The purpose of the challenge is to help you live a less stressful life and the more things you have around can make you stressed; reducing clutter will also reduce your stress; not to mention get rid of things you no longer need/use. I hope by the end of the process you achieve at least a semi-organized home, we don’t expect you to have the perfect, magazine cover home but we hope at least start on your way to a better organized home.
There’s a few ways you get a head start on your way to a more efficient home. This week at Target select organizational items are on sale AND we have a coupon to match! Check your local paper, grab the Target mobile coupon or print it off their website and you can save $5 off your purchase of $25 or more of storage/organizational items in store and online. This is a great way to kick off this challenge early; some items I like to use are baskets, plastic airtight containers, fabric bins and drawer organizers. Pair this coupon with the sale is a great deal; but if your budget is broke from the holidays like most don’t worry January is the month you’ll see organizational products on sale and if Target does like last year they will bring that coupon and deal back around and the new year starts.
I will note that even though each week is numbered you don’t have to do everything that week and each week you don’t need to go out and spend hundreds of extra dollars or organize every inch of each room. Do not strap yourself budget wise; buy what you can afford and don’t forget stores like Dollar General, and Dollar Tree have bins, and baskets at great prices. I highly suggest writing down items you’d like to purchase as the challenge goes by so you can buy piece by piece.
Here’s a few tips to get an head start:
Go through your kids clothing – I’m sure your kids got lots of new clothes for Christmas; go through what doesn’t fit them or what they don’t wear and put them away. You can decide later if you want to keep, donate or sell.
Do the same for toys – Lots of new toys mean not a lot of room for old ones. Have the kids go through their toys and for each new toy they need to get rid of at least 1 old toy. Not only will this create space for their new toys but also gets rid of ones they no longer play with. *Suggestion – Once they’ve gone through their old toys have them bag them up and donate them to a children’s shelter, hospital or daycare. It’s a good way to teach them that there’s children less fortunate than them and giving back as well.
Go through your clothing as well – Don’t forget about mom and dad; I’m sure you have old and don’t fit clothing as well. Put away to be dealt with later.
Go through pantry/food storage – If you’re lucky enough to have a pantry (I envy you!) be sure to check the dates on the food you have and donate any food you may not use.
If you do some of these items they will give you a head start on the challenge ahead the first challenge starts on January 9th which is the kitchen. I know after all the holidays it could use a good cleaning! As we get closer to the start date I’ll post the challenge so you can download and print it for use of this challenge.
