Giant Microbes are soft plush toys that are in shapes of germs, bacteria, and other micros. They may look cute but these germs can be deadly and make us very sick. I got to review one of these cute little germs, I choose the Rhino Virus or better known as the Common Cold. I really love this idea because as someone who is studying to become a nurse this will really help to give a real-life example of these viruses, bacteria, and germs we have to know. I also thought of an interesting game one could play with their microbe and this game could be modified to any age group. It’s played like a hot potato but instead of a potato, it’s the germ/virus/bacteria. The first person caught holding the germ is the carrier and afterward, you continue playing and each person caught the germ last is infected by the host. It’s a great and visual example of how fast these could be spread. I love that they come with a little fact card! There are some interesting facts about the common cold and I’d like to share them with you.
There are over 250 different kinds of cold viruses although the Rhino Virus is the most common. Rhino is Greek for “nose” and is responsible for 35% of colds. It is wildly active during the fall and winter seasons because it loves low humidity leaving your nose vulnerable because it’s drier. One way you won’t catch a cold is by being in the cold! Best way to prevent the virus? Is by frequent hand washing if you can’t wash your hands use sanitizer it can live up to three hours on the outside of your nose! The best cure for the common cold? Get plenty of rest and drink lots of liquids! These facts are brought to you by Giant Microbes!
